Audio Recorder is a Windows program that records audio, outputting the recording to the MP3 file type. From time to time, users might find themselves in need of an audio recording program, and quite a few options are available today. Both simple and advanced recorders exist, the former with few features and the latter with tons of them. It's not surprising Audio Recorder falls into the basic recording program category. However, such a description isn't necessarily a bad thing, and the program works quite well.

What Does Audio Recorder Offer For Users?

When a user opens Audio Recorder, they're presented with the main recording window. They'll see a checkbox for choosing the audio input source and controls for the left/right audio channels. Likewise, the window contains a sound mixer and various buttons for recording, pausing, and stopping audio. Most of the program's functions are found in the main window as opposed to within menus and toolbar tabs.

Perhaps the best feature of Audio Recorder is how it handles audio inputs. Before starting a recording, users can select their preferred input. The ability to choose from a microphone, speakers, or another input is incredibly useful. Users won't have to struggle with pulling audio from their preferred source after all. For some reason, not all audio recording software includes this feature, especially on the free end.

Upon completing a recording, the file can be modified in a couple of different ways. A user can select the sound quality or trim the file size, if necessary. Audio Recorder then lets the operator output the file to MP3 format, or a couple of other options. It's a simple process that's lacking in bells and whistles. Still, this setup allows a user to to record and save an audio file in the smallest time possible.

So, What Are The Downsides?

Simplicity is both Audio Recorder's main strength and greatest weakness. Advanced features are missing from the program. In fact, even standard audio editing features are missing here, and that shouldn't surprise a given user. The user interface is also dated and ugly, to say the least. Better free programs for recording audio are available today, but they aren't necessarily as simple as Audio Recorder.

The Verdict On Audio Recorder

For the most part, Audio Recorder is a solid program. It comes with a very simple feature set that it accomplishes well. Users will understand the weaknesses and limitations of the program right away. In the end, Audio Recorder works well at recording audio, but someone in need of editing capabilities or more advanced features should look elsewhere because they won't find those things here.
